*Please click "try out the demo" mode and use Google Docs to format the screenplay. Character names that are not friends or family is always advised.
​Screenplay Conventions
  • Always start with the transition, FADE IN……. Why? No reason other than tradition
  • Slug line contains 3 things - inside INT or outside EXT + location + time of day MORNING/DUSK (add CONTINUOUS when switching back and forth for location - use LATER if it’s the same location, but later in the day)
  • Always have an action description between the slug line and the dialogue
  • Always write action in present tense
  • In action, write names in ALL CAPS if their name is seen for the first time
  • Character is in ALL CAPS + (O.S). only if character is off the screen and can’t be seen + (V.O.) only if it’s a voice over
  • Character names never similar sounding (Alex, Allen)
  • Each character has a name which starts with a different letter
  • Dialogue is written in the character’s voice
  • Parentheticals () are actions a character does while speaking

Because DeadPool is behind a mask you cannot see facial expressions, so it relies on clever scripting and editing.

​Watch how when DeadPool talks it cuts to Celine Dion who reacts to DeadPool, but you still hear the voice of DeadPool when Celine is listening and reacting.

In the editing timeline, this looks like an L cut, because it actually looks like an L in  the timeline. Hearing the audio first before cutting to the person is speaking is know as a J cut!

Typography and Design
  • Create an 8 1/2 by 11" page, vertical
  • You will create an asymmetrically  balanced composition using just text and shapes.
  • The theme is your choice.
  • Use principle of Unity to unify your concept 
  • Use the principles of gestalt to make groupings
  • Use Emphasis and Subordination to control viewpoint.
  • You will explore the parameters of the text in PhotoShop -kerning between 2 characters, tracking of selected characters, leading (line spacing)
  • PhotoShop > Window > Character
  • PhotoShop > Window > Paragraph
  • Use 2 different san-serif fonts, however, make sure the "A"s and the "G"s match
  • All text will be complimentary cold colours
  • All shapes will be complimentary warm colours.
  • The background will be a neutral colour.
